SHINER - The students, parents and school administrators are giving Shiner's new campus high marks after the first week of classes.

Shiner High School senior Megan Novosad said the new classrooms would result in a better learning experience, which would lead to better grades and better test results.

Sophomore Jennifer Campaigne was more specific in her compliments and criticism.

"We've got better technology in the computer rooms, better acoustics in the band hall and in the chemistry lab there's room for everybody," she said. "I like the new building, but I have gotten lost a couple times this first week."

Christy Holmes has four children at the kindergarten through 12th grade campus. They are in second, fifth, seventh and 10th grades.

"They love it," she said. "They come home bragging about the school."

At Wednesday's district board meeting, board member Dr. Maurice Wilkerson said that she heard a number of positive comments from parents, students and teachers. She said the older students were particularly impressed with the improvements they are seeing in the high school laboratories and the new agriculture facilities.

District Superintendent Trey Lawrence said he was nervous about opening week but said the students have adjusted well to the change and have responded positively to the new building.

The new $7.493 million campus replaced a high school building that was opened in 1927 and an elementary school that opened in 1954.

The classroom portion has elementary classes downstairs with the secondary classrooms upstairs. The rest of the campus, connected by an enclosed walkway, includes science and computer labs, the cafeteria, gym, vocational classrooms and library and will be shared by all grades.
