Shiner Independent School District superintendent Trey Lawrence and the
board of trustees acknowledged several donations toward the new school at
their April 11 board meeting.
Superintendent Lawrence informed the board of the donations and expressed
his appreciation to all the donors.
Lone Star Bank donated cabinets for all the classrooms for teacher use.
David and Josh Kaspar, Carli and Joey, donated stage curtains for the new
school.
A Shiner school flag, which will fly from one of the flag poles at the
entrance of the school was donated by Shiner Embroidery Works.
The painting of the Comanche head on the gym floor was paid for by
donations from a fund drive spearheaded by Collin O'Connor and Texas
Thunder Radio.
Finally, the boy's and girl's gym dressing rooms will have lockers, thanks
to an anonymous donor.
Trustee Laura Kaspar asked Architect Jim Singleton if these donations will
free some budgeted money for other needed items for the school. Singleton
said that it is possible and he would find out and report to the board.
Singleton said most of work last month included exhaust and electrical
work in the shop area. He said excellent work has been done on the punch
list items. In answer to Gloria Reindl's question about some leaks in one
of the hallways, he said the contractor is aware of that and is working on
the problem. He said the damaged tiles will be replaced when all leaks are
taken care of.
Singleton said as soon as school lets out at the end of May, he will
coordinate with the kitchen crew to start moving equipment and freezer
units into the new cafeteria. He added that approximately $32,000 worth of
work is still to be done for final completion of the building. He said the
contractor would do the final cleaning and then the school would be
responsible for floor waxing.
The board approved a pay request of $59,353.15 to Sterling Structures.
High school principal David Husmann introduced Bruce Pohler as the
recipient of the 2007 Tech Prep Teacher of Region III. Mr. Husmann praised
Mr. Pohler, noting that this is the third time that a teacher from Shiner
ISD has been selected for the honor. Previous winner was Susan Sembera who
was selected twice.
He added that Shiner ISD is the only school that has received two awards
for its tech program.
Both Mr. Pohler and the school received plaques.
Board president Denise Overton announced that since all trustee races are
uncontested the May 12, 2007 election could be canceled. A motion to that
effect was adopted.
The problem of excess sand rock at the new campus site was also settled
with Garland Schlenker given the go-ahead to remove all the material with
no cost to the district. Mr. Schlenker would able to keep the material.
However, he would be responsible for clean up, restoration of the site and
any damage to property during removal.
By a vote of 6-1 the board approved a budget amendment moving $135,000 from
the fund balance to the budget for the purchase of the administration
office and any fees associated with the purchase. Gloria Reindl cast the
no vote.
President Overton and Laura Kaspar reported on the Capitol Legislative
Update meeting held in Austin recently.
The May board meeting was moved to May 23.
