Shiner ISD board of trustees, students, faculty and citizens were given the
good news of the up-coming completion of the new K-12 school complex.
Architect Jim Singleton announced the facility should be completed by late
January 2007 with move-in to be determined by the administration after that.
Singleton and other construction personnel led the school board members,
students, faculty and interested citizens in a walk-thru of the complex last
Wednesday.
Singleton reported that approximately 72 percent of the construction is
completed. "There is still lots to do," he said. "But everyone is working very
hard and putting in long hours," he added.
Project Superintendent, Rocky Menke of Sterling Structures, said he's had as
many as 75 people working daily. "The number of workers changes depending on
what needs to be done each day. But, like I said, we've had as many as 75 on
certain days."
Board members were impressed with the progress being made since last month's
walk-thru.
Singleton told the board at the meeting following the walk thru that major work
has been completed. "We're down to paint touch ups, ceilings and those things
that are always done last."
He said he was pleased with the progress being made.
Michael Huser asked if everything had been ordered and purchased and would it
all be available when needed. Singleton said he knew of nothing that hasn't
been purchased but would check and confirm delivery dates.
He said the paving is on line and the contractor is trying to get the AC system
operational by the end of November. "The AC is a key to completion so ceilings
and interior can be finished," he said.

Superintendent Trey Lawrence said other schools have inquired about the project
and said it is good to know that other districts are following what Shiner is
doing.
The board approved a pay request of $592,550.33 from Sterling Structures.
The superintendent's report showed total receipts for October were
$1,575,808.85 which included Capital Project draw of $603,120.29 from the Lease
Purchase Revenue Bond account.
Total expenditures totaled $973,668.52, leaving a bank balance of
$2,164,740.38. He reported that other campus activity funds were in good
financial shape.
Cafeteria revenue was down slightly compared to last year at this time but were
up from September.
Mr. Lawrence noted that tax collections have been pretty brisk during October,
totaling $344,009.77.
SISD enrollment as of November 2 was 536, an increase of nine since the
beginning of school and two more than at the end of 2005-06 school year.
In other business, the board authorized the superintendent to advertise for
bids for the sale of the district's unused handicapped bus.
The last item on the agenda was the faculty and staff Christmas party.
Tentative date was set for December 14.
