SHINER — With all the excitement built up for Shiner St. Paul’s season, tonight is just the first
step to the road towards success. And for the Cardinals to start off with a win, they cannot
overlook the Yorktown Wildcats, a team they’ve beat last season.
"I think last year we were very fortunate at the beginning of the game," head coach Jake
Wachsmuth said. "We played hard but we got a lot of breaks that went our way early." *
Yorktown fumbled the ball four times and the Cardinals took advantage of their mistakes. The
first score of the game was a safety when the snap went over the Yorktown punter. Shiner St. Paul
would score 35 unanswered before the Wildcats scored all 14 of their points in the fourth
quarter.
Now that the Cardinals are traveling to Yorktown, the game is going to be a lot tougher according
to Wachsmuth.
"We’re going to have to work really."
As for the game planning, Wachsmuth mentioned that the Cardinals don’t necessarily do very many
adjustments early on.
"We kind of do what we do," he simply added.
But even though many teams will probably want to stop the Cardinals’ run, St. Paul is more than
capable of gaining some yards over the air.
"We obviously can run or throw," Wachsmuth said, "we’re just going to have to see which one of
those things is going to be better based on how [Yorktown] line up."
Getting off to a good start is always a positive, but it’s "not the end of the world" if they
start off a big slow.
"For confidence, it’s always a good thing," the head coach said about tonight’s game. "I think
it’s always easy to come back and correct things after some winning."
Shiner St. Paul’s confidence has been talked about over the preseason. If they can get a win
against a playoff team, the Cardinals can use that confidence to continue on through their non-
district portion of the schedule.
Tonight’s game is at Yorktown, with kickoff scheduled at 7:30 p.m.
