It was a dark end to an ugly Friday night for the St. Joseph football team, as the Flyers fell 28-0 to Shiner in a game shortened by a power outage at Patti Welder Stadium.
Shiner (2-0) held the Flyers to 132 yards of offense, as St. Joseph (0-2) failed to score for the second straight game. The Flyers didn't do themselves any favors either, committing 10 penalties on the night for a total of 50 yards.
"They are the No. 7 ranked team in 2A for a reason," St. Joseph head coach Dustin Meaux said of Shiner. "We talked to our kids about controlling what we can control, and we weren't as disciplined as we needed to be. They were as disciplined as they needed to be, and I think that was the difference in the ball game."
Shiner quarterback Brandon Cerny carried his team through a hot and muggy night with 87 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Cerny scores came on runs of 27 and 5 yards and helped the Comanches take a 12-0 lead into the half.
"Us one-way guys had to be the energy for those two-way guys who never come off the field," Cerny said. "I had to find a spark and go. It was pretty tough with it being so humid and wet, it wore you down."
Shiner running back Dadrian Taylor, who rushed for 176 yards and four touchdowns in the Comanches' 49-0 season-opener against Industrial last week, was limited to 59 yards on nine carries. Taylor fumbled the ball three times, including a turnover at the St. Joseph 5-yard line.
He left the game after injuring his shoulder on defense in the third quarter. However, Shiner head coach Steven Cerny said the injury does not appear serious and Taylor was left on the bench for precautionary reasons.
"I think Dadrian (Taylor) was trying to do too much," Steven Cerny said. "There were times were he was dancing a little bit. St. Joe is a very physical team, and if you dance too much, they are going to find a way to put a hat on you. We are going to fix that. He's going to learn, and we are going to get better."
Shiner's Chad Neubauer had 60 yards on 10 carries and completed a 28-yard pass to Justin Stovall.
Justin Stein, who came in for Taylor, rushed five times for 50 yards and a touchdown.
"Justin came in and ran well for us," Steven Cerny said. "He's a north-south runner and he's very quick. He's a tough runner, and I feel good about him coming in."
Shiner lineman Taylor Mraz also recorded a touchdown, as he jumped on a loose ball in the end zone after Neubauer fumbled inside the 5-yard line.
St. Joseph quarterback Logan Terry gained 41 yards on 15 carries and was 2 of 8 passing for 18 yards. Matt Vallejo had 36 yards on eight carries, while Dyllan Witte had 19 yards on three carries. Standout running back Charlie Quary was limited to 18 yards on five carries while returning from a shoulder injury.
The game was called with 6:50 left in the fourth quarter.
Shiner will host Goliad next week while St. Joseph continues its challenging start to the season with a trip to Weimar.
"I think we are going to be where we need to be come district play," Meaux said. "Where we need to be is ready. Whether we are 2-2 or 0-4, we are going to be ready. I think you need to play these kinds of games and face a little adversity to learn how to handle adversity."
