SHINER - The Lady Comanches completed the trifecta this season.
The Lady Comanches had to face the defending state champion Louise Lady Hornets twice
in the regular season, and won both times.
To add to that, they ran into them again in the regional quarterfinals, winning in four
games at Schulenburg to earn their fourth appearance at the regional tournament in four
years.
"We just take it on like any other game, we use our team work, we worked together, and
that's what we apply every single game," said senior Randi Berkovsky. "Louise was no
different."
They were winners of District 29-1A, perhaps one of the best in the state, and the
competition they faced didn't allow them a moment of rest.
They shared a district with Louise, the defending state champion, and Flatonia, a team
that made the state tournament recently.
"It's been intense, playing Flatonia is always intense, and having Louise in the mix
this year made it a double whammy," said senior Laurie Morkovsky.
Added Berkovsky: "We had to work for every single game, none of the games were given to
us. They're all wonderful teams."
Shiner did dodge a bullet in the first round, drawing Burton instead of Thrall, who was
considered one of the top teams in the region.
But of all things the Lady Comanches were working on in practice leading up to Friday,
serve and receive was the big one.
While they beat Louise pretty handily, the team wasn't totally happy with their
performance, especially off the serve.
"We're expecting to see some really tough serves, and that's what we were working on in
practice and the last three days," said senior Jessica Arledge.
Lady Comanches coach Michelle Winkenwerder said the team has a strong offense that is
built on striking quickly.
Struggling off the serve, though, takes that advantage away by allowing opponents to
set up blocks.
"We have a lot of quick offense, and that's what this group of girls are good at," she
said. "If you can run a quick offense, there's very few teams that can match.
"There's teams that have one or two great hitters, but very few teams have four or five
great hitters. We'll come at you in the middle, we'll come at you from the right side,
we'll come at you from the left. You have to respect them."
