PLEASANTON - Some injuries and a less-than-ideal performance in the regular-season closer left Shiner knowing they would have to step up in the first round of the playoffs.

The Comanches responded in a good way as they passed by Freer 40-6 in the bi-district round ( on Friday, November 11, 2023 ) at Pleasanton ISD's Eagle Stadium.

"We had some injuries last week (against Kenedy); we did not win that game the way we wanted to," senior running back-linebacker Trace Bishop said. "I think we answered in this game. Had a lot of people step up and I am proud of the way we played tonight."

"Proud of how our kids came out of the locker room with lots of energy. We prepared well this week," Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "Defensively, we did a great job of containing their quarterback. He had that long run on us early and once we adapted to his speed, we did a good job of being physical. We tackled well at times."

Freer got inside the 10 on their first possession before an interception killed the drive and the Buckaroos only crossed the 50 a couple of times after that. Shiner forced three punts, intercepted three passes and stopped Freer on fourth down. Freer quarterback Peyton Borden led his offense with 37 yards on the ground but made some friends on the Shiner defense as they hung out with Borden in his backfield, sacking him three times and tackling him for a loss seven times. He was 5-of-19 passing for 73 yards.

The Buckaroos avoided a scoreboard shut with touchdown on specials team near the end of the game.

The Comanche offense put in a strong performance with 310 rushing yards and 116 passing yards.

Schuette ran for a touchdown and threw for a touchdown while Bishop paced the running game with 155 yards and a touchdown. After punting on its first offensive series, the Comanches scored on six straight possessions.

"We did a good job of moving the ball down the field with our backs running hard," Boedeker said.

Shiner freshmen contributed a lot, being involved with three of the six touchdowns.

Bode Werner ran for 70 yards and two touchdowns with Quincy Jones toting the ball six time for 56 yards and one touchdown.

"That is huge for those guys. They have been coming along slowly as the season has progressed . Been working them in more and they continue to get better every week. They have exciting futures ahead of them," Boedeker said.

On the game's opening possession, a 37-yard run by Borden on a 3rd-and-1 play from his own 48 got Freer into the red zone before eventually reaching the 4 before a tackle for loss, followed by Schuette picking off Borden killed the drive.

After a first-down run for 11 from the 20 to the 31, Shiner gained just 5 more yards before punting for 53 to pin Freer inside their own 20.

The Buckaroos picked up a first down on the drive but stalled short of their 30 and punted to the Shiner 43. Bishop ran five straight times for 47 yards; the Comanches got to the 7 and an apparent Werner touchdown was called back on holding. The Comanches later found themselves at 4th-and-8 at the 12 where Schuette dropped back to pass and then decided to scramble, reaching the 2; two plays later, he scored on a 1-yard sneak for a 7-0 lead with 9:43 left in the half.

Another Freer punt close to the 50 gave Shiner the ball at their 39 and a 14-yard run by Bishop, followed by 20 yards on two penalties on Freer got Shiner to the 27, where Werner took a pitch around the right side and scored for a 14-0 lead.

On the Buckaroo's next drive, they rolled the dice a little, running the ball on a fake-punt play, coming up 6 yards shy of the stick, giving Shiner the ball at the plus-47. Bishop and Werner combined to get the Comanches down to the 35 and Schuette hit Adamek over the middle for a 35-yard touchdown strike and a 21-0 lead with just over a minute until halftime.

The Comanches got a 15-yard penalty on the second-half kickoff, starting at their 20 but marched 80 yards in 12 plays, finishing the drive on a 16-yard run by Werner with 5:55 left in the third.

Borden completed an 18-yard pass to Xander Espinoza on the second play of the following drive but he was tackled for a 2-yard loss on the next play, followed by an incomplete pass and then another pass into the hands of Schuette near the Shiner 17.

Adamek caught a 16-yard pass on third down from the 19 before Jones ran for 22 and then 16 yards to get the Comanches down to the 27. Later, Bishop caught an 11-yard pass down tot eh 16 and scored on a toss two plays later with the point after no good, leaving Shiner ahead 34-0 with 19 seconds left in the third.

A lengthy drive for Freer stalled near the 50 and the Buckaroos punted again.

The Comanches replaced Schuette with Jake Simper and a 54-yard pass to Kyle Muehlstein on the second gave Shiner first-and-goal at the 3, followed by a Jones 3-yard run and Jones attempted the two-point run but was stopped.

Jones got Shiner's third pick of the night but the Comanches, playing with their third-string offense, went three and out, and Abel Maldonado broke through, blocked the punt, picked it up at the 1 and scored Freer's lone touchdown of the game.
