Comanches hold their own against Refugio

The Shiner Comanches had no illusion about the mountain of a task they had on Friday night ( October 20, 2023 ) against Refugio.

Shiner pinned its ears back and went after the Bobcats with all their might but came up short 26-7.
"We competed our tails off. The kids knew it was going to be a challenge and they did not hold back," Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "They gave everything they had and it was just unfortunate that we came up short."
Prognosticators had the 'Cats picked to win by 28 or more points but Shiner proved that prediction to just a little off because of playing Refugio very physical.
"I saw us try to play physical and mix it up good," Boedeker said. "Proud of the effort, just disappointed in the end result."
Shiner rushed for 164 yards on 49 carries, averaging 3.34 yards a gain and Tahj Brooks led with a 100-yard game with 109 yards on 19 carries. Carson Schuette's only completion on six pass attempts was for Shiner's only touchdown.
Refugio's Kelan Brown was 12-of-17 for 221 yards and two touchdowns.
The 'Cats were limited to just under 100 yards (99) on the ground with Jordan King rushing 17 times for 43 yards. Ernest Campbell was the leading catcher with four grabs for 73 yards.
Shiner took the opening kickoff and scored to take the first lead, and then held Refugio to a punt on their first series. In the first frame, Shiner ran 21 plays compared to six or seven for the 'Cats.
"Scoring on our first drive was huge because we set the tone in the game right there. We knew it was going to be just three or four yards at a time and that was a good play for us," Boedeker said. "We had to win the battle up front and the backs ran hard. Offensive guys got after it; we played as hard as we could for four quarters. This was one of the better games we put together ."
Shiner is open this week and closes out the regular season Nov. 3 at Kenedy.

"We are going to keep focusing on our blocking and tackling because those are the most important parts of the game and it will be what is important as we move forward and play good teams," Boedeker said. "We tackled pretty good tonight but we still have to get better at. Still need to focus on pad level with the linemen."
On the game's opening drive, two 15-yard penalties by Refugio helped get the Comanches down to the 'Cats 16 before a holding call pushed Shiner back a little. The Comanches converted a 4th-and-2 at the 13 with a 2-yard run by Trace Bishop, Shiner got inside the 9 but appeared to stall out and Schuette found Bishop for an 8-yard touchdown on fourth down from the 8.
On Refugio's first drive, running back King ran twice for a total of 1 yard and Brown threw incomplete to force a punt.
Shiner picked up a first down on the next drive but could not reach the 50 and punted. Refugio then knotted the score with a 52-yard pass from Kelan Brown to Isaiah Avery with 11:52 left in the first half.
The 'Cats forced another punt and got a return to the Shiner 24, they got inside the 15 before another 15-yard penalty moved them back to 27, a few plays later, they had first and goal at the 6 after a Shiner penalty before a holding call moved them to the 16. A few plays later, Brown tossed a short pass to Chai Whitmire who danced around defenders to put Refugio ahead 13-7 after the 'Cats attempted to kick a point after but decided after the snap to try for two and the pass fell short.
The half ended as Shiner tossed an incomplete pass on fourth down from their Refugio 45.
The 'Cats opened the second half with a 53-yard drive in seven plays, overcoming a fumbled snap; King scored on a 1-yard run and Refugio was stopped on the two-point run with 9:01 left in the third box.
Refugio got two interceptions the next two times their defense was on the field but their offensive friends did not get far, having to punt and then lose a fumble to the Comanche defense inside the Shiner 16.
The 'Cats got a turnover on downs and drove 41 yards in nine plays, overcoming a penalty; they scored on a 2-yard run by King taking a wildcat snap and Brown tacked on the point after for a 26-7 with 3:38 left in the game.
On the next drive, Brooks ripped off a solid run of 26 yards, from his 25 to the Refugio 49 before the 'Cats held on fourth down. A 38-yard pass from Brown to Campbell to the Shiner 26 put the 'Cats in scoring position until more penalties pushed them back and they elected to run out the clock.
