The Shiner Comanches are continuing to pick up steam.

Shiner (2-5) went to 2-1 after three district games following a little bit of a shootout, outscoring Three Rivers 45-30 Friday ( October 6, 2023 ) at Comanche Stadium.

"We have been working day in and day out just like everyone else," senior running back/linebacker Trace Bishop said. "We have not seen as much of the rewards as we wanted to. I feel this is the turnaround point for our season."

"It was a shootout. We knew Three Rivers was good offensively," Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "They score over 40 points a game and we knew it would be difficult to keep them out of the end zone. Overall, we are still making mistakes but are cutting down on them. We are learning to play more physical and learning to play faster because our knowledge of assignments is getting better. Just have to continue to keep improving."

After not attempting a pass last game against Bloomington, Shiner, with Carson Schuette back at quarterback, completed four passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 261 on 41 attempts.

"I was really proud of how our offense moved the football. We played well on the offensive line. Backs ran well and Carson (Schuette) had a good game at quarterback," Boedeker said.

Bishop had a huge night on offense with two catches for 83 yards, both touchdowns and leading Shiner on the ground with 146 yards on 20 carries. Tahj Brooks played a supporting role as he went over 100 with 119 on 17 carries and one touchdown.

"I loved the way the offensive line played and I loved the way the defense played. I felt we were good on all sides of the ball," Bishop said.

The Bulldogs were able to effectively run and throw with 382 yards of offense but were stopped on fourth down by the Comanches defense twice and also had a very short punt.

"We had a little trouble tackling at times because Three Rivers is bigger than us. Our guys competed and we got the stops when we needed to," Boedeker said.

Shiner received the first half kickoff, starting at its own 16. After an incomplete pass and two runs totaling 10 yards by Brooks, Schuette found tight end Kyle Muehlstein for 20 on 2nd-and-13 before repeating the feat a few plays later on 3rd-and-18, going for 22 yards down to the Bulldog 40. A few plays later, Schuette found Bishop who had got past his defenders for a 26-yard touchdown strike.

Three Rivers appeared to start inside its own 20 and caught a break when quarterback Caden Soliz scrambled and fumbled while being tackled but the referees called the play back on an inadverent whistle. A few plays later, Shiner was called for pass interference to give the 'Dogs a first down at their 30, and they used the run and the pass to eventually get on the board with a 3-yard run by Kaiden Inman. The point-after attempt was blocked by Jared Werner, leaving Shiner ahead 7-6.

The Comanches answered with a three-play, 68-yard drive capped by a 57-yard pass from Schuette to Bishop. Schuette scrambled into the end zone on the two-point play and Shiner was up 15-6 with no time left on the clock in the first quarter.

Less than three minutes into the second box, Inman scored on a 1-yard run and caught a two-point pass from Soliz as TR got within 15-14.

Schuette was intercepted on the next drive; the 'Dogs could not get out of their own half and were stopped a yard shy on a 4th-and-13 play from their 32.

The Comanches then went 44 yards in four quick plays with a 31-yard touchdown run by Brooks. Schuette hit Kye Adamek for two and a 23-14 lead, which Shiner took into the halftime break.

On their first possession of the second half, TR got past the 50 but stalled out and then shanked the punt for just 3 yards to the Shiner 40. A six-play, 60-yard drive ended as Bishop handled an option pitch and raced 29 yards for a score and then had the two-point run for a 31-14 Shiner lead.

TR failed on fourth down inside their own 35 and Shiner took advantage as Bishop went 33 yards up the middle. The point-after kick was no good but Shiner was ahead 37-14.

The 'Dogs got a 7-yard run by Inman to cap a 70-yard drive in 10 plays and the two-point play for a 37-22 lead with 1:26 left in the third.

Bishop's 1-yard run with 5:29 left in the game put Shiner up 45-22 following another successful two-point conversion.

The 'Dogs put together one last drive and James Contreras scored on a 10-yard run and the two-point play with 1:10 left in the contest.
