Shiner falls to Ganado in district opener

The Comanches' attempt to get their ship sailing in the right direction continued Friday ( September 22, 2023 ) in their 15-2A opener against Ganado.

The Indians scored two touchdowns in each half and held Shiner to one score in a 28-6 decision.
"Once again, a lot of things we could have done better," Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "It still comes down to the same stuff every week."
Ganado quarterback Bryce Ullman passed for 120 yards and two touchdowns while Austen Pena and Logan Bures added a rushing touchdown apiece.
Quarterback Carson Schuette led the Shiner ground game as he ran for 44 yards and one touchdown.
The Comanches were able to get some stops on defense, including two interceptions; the offense was unable to capitalize on those but did have a couple of explosive plays.
"Offensively, we could not get any drives going, and it is a matter of us being able to stay on our blocks and be able to move the chain," Boedeker said.
Shiner's defense gave up its lowest point total of the season but still struggled to fully contain Ganado ball carriers.
"Defensively, we did not tackle all that well. We are undersized at times and we have to get more people to the football," Boedeker said. "We have to look at what we are doing, reevaluate and see what we can do to be successful."
Shiner grabbed interceptions on back-to-back drives, including one in the red zone, late in the second quarter to keep the Indians from extending their lead to more than two touchdowns at the break.
"Those were huge because we went into halftime down 14-0; we were down but not out because we had a couple of big plays to keep them out of the end zone," Boedeker said.
Ganado fumbled three times on their first drive of the second but managed to recover all three and eventually put points on the board.
Not being able to grab another turnover and chip away at the score at that time put pressure on Shiner.
"We were hoping to use the momentum and Ganado tried to give the ball back to us on the first drive of the second half on some fumbles," Boedeker said. "We could not get those fumbles and they end up taking it down the field on a big play and scoring, putting us behind. We then had to hurry up and do things we were not used to having to do."
Boedeker said the number one way to get better was to continue to working on the play of both lines.
"Our path to improvement starts up front with our steps. We are still in the learning phase on some things; we are seeing improvement in practice but it has not translated to the field (during games) yet," he said.
Shiner took the opening kickoff and picked up a first down but eventually punted to its own 41. Ganado used the ground game to get down to the 18 before Shiner sacked Ullman back to the 25 and he got redemption quickly with a touchdown pass to Austen Pena for a 7-0 lead at the 4:55 mark of the first quarter.
Shiner went three and out, and got Ganado at their own 28. With the running of Dylan Holt, Pena and Vince Sablatura, the Indians got inside Shiner's 5 and Pena had a 3-yard run to give Ganado a 14-0 lead 24 seconds into the second quarter.
After several exchange of punts, Ganado started the Comanche 44 and Ullman tried a long pass to quickly move close to the end zone but Schuette got an interception to set up Shiner at its own 12. After a short 1-yard run by Rakin Wallace, Schuette optioned left and picked up a huge 35-yard rush. The Comanches were able to cross the 50 but a Schuette pass on a 4th-and-4 from the Indian 46 was incomplete.
Ullman had a 14-yard pass to Pena and a personal-foul call on the Comanches extended the gain down to the 25. Ullman evaded pressure to scramble for 11 yards to the 14 but on the next play, was intercepted by Schuette with just a few seconds left until halftime.
Ganado started the third at the 50 and moved inside the Shiner 40 before a fumble caused by a bad snap resulted in an 11-yard loss. Ullman then hit Holt on a 22-yard screen pass. Two more fumbles pushed Ganado back to the 33; Ullman scrambled for 24 on the next play and two plays later, found Cain Hayden for a 9-yard touchdown pass and a 21-0 lead with 7:32 left in the third.
Shiner then put together a 75-yard, 13-play drive to end the shutout. Schuette ran for 4 on 4th-and-1 from the Shiner 34; Trace Bishop had an 8-yard run on first down from the Shiner 38 to the 46. A couple of plays later, Wallace got Shiner to the Indian 41and then Schuette had to hop on a fumbled snap for an 11-yard loss. Shiner then made an invigorating play - Schuette handed off to Bishop who then gave the ball to receiver Jordan Harrison coming around on a reverse for a massive 36-yard gain to the 11. Three plays later, Schuette scored on a 1-yard sneak and Ganado blocked the PAT to hold a 21-6 lead with 1:18 left in the third.
Ganado got down to the 25 on the next drive with help from a personal foul from Shiner before the Indians committed one of their own and another fumble resulted in an 15-yard loss that killed the drive, resulting in a 57-yard punt.
Schuette had to come out of the game after the first play of the Shiner drive starting at the 20; sophomore Jake Simper took over for six plays to get the Comanches closer to the 50 before Schuette returned.
A bad snap pushed Shiner back to their 30 and Schuette scrambled for 10 yards on 4th-and-25, trying to keep the drive going.
Ganado capped scoring with a 13-yard run by Logan Bures to cap a quick four-play drive.
