It was not the most pleasant night for the Shiner Comanches on Friday night ( September 15, 2023 ) against East Bernard.

The Comanches closed the book on non-district play with a 49-6 loss to East Bernard.

Shiner (0-4) was held to under 200 yards of offense, committed three turnovers and was unable to contain the Brahmas who gained 166 yards on the ground and another 159 through the air.

"It was disappointing; the kids are disappointed. East Bernard is a good team. We could have done a lot of things better," Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "We needed to execute better on offense, make more tackles on defense and prevent big plays. Definitely, a lot of things to work on. Our system is not broke; we are going to go and look at some things to get ourselves in a better position to be successful."

Shiner held East Bernard to one first-half touchdown and the Brahmas kicked a pair of field goals. Shiner had the chance to close down to a one-possession game as they got inside the 10 late in the second quarter but a turnover killed the drive.

East Bernard outscored the Comanches 22-0 in the third quarter and put in a couple of scores in the fourth quarter until Shiner ended the shutout with a late score.

A positive from their four-game non-district schedule was the players got a lot of varsity-game experience to prepare for district which starts this week against Ganado.

"A lot of these players now have four varsity games under their belt against really good opponents and that is going to pay off for us in the end," Boedeker said. "These non-district games have not been easy and a lot of these guys are having to grow up fast, and I like the way they are responding and their practice habits are really good. Just have to get the results on the field."

With 2:29 left in the first half and down 13-0, Shiner started at its 29 after a kickoff return and quarterback Carson Schuette found wide receiver Boe Boehm for a 25-yard pass down to the EB 46 and two plays later, Schuette hit running back Trace Bishop for 38 yards to the EB 5. Shiner lost a couple of yards on the next two plays, tossed an incomplete pass and attempted to convert the fourth but EB sacked Schuette and he fumbled the ball with the Brahams recovering and then running out the clock to end the half.

EB overcame a 15-yard penalty on the third-quarter kickoff return to drive 85 yards in six plays, scoring on a 36-yard pass from Clayton Fajkus to Maddox Crist and the two worked together on the two-point play for a 21-0 Brahmas lead.

Fajkus and Crist connected again on a 22-yard pass to polish off a 48-yard, five-play drive after forcing a Shiner punt. And repeated when Shiner punted down to the Brahma 44 and Fajkus hit Alex Henriquez on a 56-yard screen pass to put EB ahead 35-0 with 2:35 left in the third quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, EB stopped another Shiner fourth-down conversion but the Comanches defense stopped the Brahmas at their 37 to force a punt.

EB defense got a turnover when linebacker Cannon Goudeau grabbed a Schuette pass at the Shiner 33 and returned it for a touchdown.

Shiner lost a fumble deep in its own territory and EB capitalized with a 28-yard run by Malik Thomas.

Shiner continued to work on offense - Bishop had rushes of 14 and 12 yards to set up Shiner at their EB 49; Tahj Brooks and Rakin Wallace had gains of 1 and 3 yards, respectively, to the EB 45 where Drake Cerny busted a run up the middle and 45 yards for a score; Schuette tried to scramble for the end zone on the two-point conversion but was stopped short.

The Brahmas forced Shiner to go three-and-out after the Comanches took the opening kickoff. Henriquez carried EB down inside the 10 before settling for the 29-yard field goal by Randon Polak.

The Brahmas got great field position at the Shiner 18 after Schuette was sacked on a 4th-and-3 play to set up a 12-yard pass from Fajkus to Crist.

EB, on their next possession, went from their own 39 to the Shiner 9 but had to settle again for a field goal, which gave them a 13-0 lead in the second quarter at the 2:35 mark.

The Comanches will host Ganado at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) in the 15-2A-D1 opener for both schools.
