Hallettsville was a team with lots of speed but Shiner compounded the situation with its own errors.

Jorian Wilson threw two touchdowns passes, Jashaun Price ran for a touchdown and threw for a touchdown with Damarion Austin and Tradyn Williams also scoring as the Brahmas dealt the Comanches a 41-8 loss at Comanche Stadium to open the season [ on Friday, August 25, 2023 ].
The Comanches had two turnovers, had 60 yards in penalties and did not finish some tackles which allowed the Brahmas to make several big plays.
"We did not help ourselves by getting penalties. We expected some penalties since it is the first game but it just happened way too much," Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "We had some third and fourth downs on defense where they scored. Those are plays we have to make and we will; it was a good learning point. It helped to see the speed Hallettsville has because we have to be able to play at that level. We have to take better angles and I was disappointed in our tackling as we had lots of missed tackles that gave them extra yards."
Boedeker knows that the Comanches will take the lessons they learned and get better gradually.
"I know these guys will get better because of the way they work," he said.
Shiner gained 224 yards of offense and ran the ball 40 times for 204 yards, led by Trace Bishop who had 14 carries for 104 yards with Drake Cerny rushing for 26 yards and one touchdown.
"Offensively, we got behind the chains a little but we moved the ball well at times. We would put decent drives together and then have a turnover or penalty that set us back. We saw good things that we are going to build on and improve," Boedeker said.
Shiner took the opening kickoff but went three plays and out, punting to the Brahmas 17. A 9-yard run on a jet sweep by Layne Gerke on third down from the Hallettsville 24 led to a Brahmas first down at the 43 and two plays later, Price ran 55-yards for a touchdown and 7-0 lead at the 7:16 mark of the first quarter.

Hallettsville took advantage of another three and out, starting at its 29, going 71 yards in six plays. Rashaun Sidney took a screen pass from Wilson on 2nd-and-11 and gained 19 yards. A few plays later, Wilson slung a 14-yard pass to Price for a 13-0 lead with 2:49 left in the opening quarter after the point after was missed.
On the next drive, Shiner gained a first down after a 10-yard run by Rakin Wallace but Hallettsville grabbed an interception on the next play. The Brahmas got down to the Shiner 20 before Shiner's Kyle Muehlstein took down Wilson for a loss of 10 yards, forcing a fumble that Muehlstein recovered.
Shiner was unable to take full advantage and ended up punting, setting up the Brahmas at the Comanches 26 after the return. Hallettsville stalled a little and faced fourth down at the 23. Price took a handoff in the backfield and lofted a halfback pass to Gerke for a touchdown and 20-0 Brahma lead with 8:43 left in the first half.
A pre-snap penalty partly led to Shiner facing 4th-and-3 at their 39; Shiner rolled the dice, as quarterback Carson Schuette option pitched to Bishop who ripped off a 56-yard run inside the Brahmas 10 but fumbled the ball out of bounds; four plays later, Cerny scored from the 1 and Schuette completed a throw to Wallace to get Shiner within 20-8 with just a few minutes left in the second quarter. No one scored on the next two drives to end the half.
Hallettsville got a 13-yard run by Damarion Austin on the first play of the third quarter but he fumbled the ball and Schuette recovered. However, Shiner could not take advantage and failed a fourth-down conversion from the Brahmas 36.
The Brahmas scored twice in the third - a 38-yard pass from Wilson to Gerke and a 49-yard run by Austin.
Hallettsville stopped the Shiner offense by either a turnover or on fourth down while the Brahmas scored once in the fourth quarter, a 4-yard run by Tradyn Williams.
