And the hard effort paid off as the Comanches returned to the field, beating Kenedy 55-7 in the 15-2ADI opener Friday night ( October 13, 2017 ) at Comanche Stadium.
I told our players that Kenedy is dealing with some injuries and has a young team but I was very pleased with the two weeks of practice we have had and we had great effort in the game, Shiner head coach Steven Cerny said. I felt like we made ourselves a better football team.
Cerny said he did not like the Comanches losing two fumbles in the first half.
After forcing a three-and-out on the first drive, Shiner scored on the 52-yard punt return by Donyai Taylor. Kenedy fumbled the ball on the next drive, setting up Shiner at the 16 of the Lions.
Collin Bujnoch gained 6 yards on the first play and Jacob Cowan took a toss play and scored for a 14-0 Comanche lead.
After getting another stop, Shiner muffed the punt and Kenedy had first down at the 37 but later turned the ball over on downs. Two plays later, the Comanches lost their second fumble of the game. The Lions started inside Shiner territory but turned the ball over as quarterback Dedrick Wilson scrambled on fourth down and was shy of the sticks.
Shiner took over at its 28 and Lane Nevlud took the dive-play handoff and raced 72 yards for a touchdown.
The extra-point snap was mishandled and the resulting two-point pass fell short but Shiner led 20-0.
The Comanches got the two points back as Wilson was sacked in the end zone by SL Lewis.
After the kickoff, Shiner got a start at the plus-35 and on the second play, Taylor took a speed-option pitch for the touchdown and the Comanches led 29-0 with less than a minute in the first quarter.
The Lions managed a spark early in the second quarter as Wilson hit Oscar Hinojosa on a with a 70-yard pass to the Shiner 8. However, the Lions missed a 29- yard field goal attempt.
In the latter half of the second box, Tyler Mikes went 31 yards on a quarterback option keeper and Bujnoch scored on a 4-yard run giving Shiner a 41-0 lead at halftime.
Shiner drove 65 yards on the first drive of the third quarter and scored on a 1-yard run by reserve running back Caleb Neal.
Shiner kicked a short kickoff which they recovered and scored early in the fourth quarter on the 2-yard run by Cesar Reyes.
Kenedy ended the shutout as Wilson scrambled 60 yards for a score with around seven minutes left in the game.
