State Softball Tournament Roundup
Class A SemiFinals
SHINER 3, McLEOD 0
Shiner's Heather Haas struck out five of the first seven batters,
allowed only one hit and finished with eight strikeouts as the
Comanches shut out McLeod.
Haas improved to 21-6. Shiner (22-6-1) scored all three runs in
the third inning when Lauren Michalec walked with one out and
moved to second on a single to left field by Haas. Michalec scored
on a single by Paige Michalec and Haas scored on a sacrifice fly by Alyssa Strauss.
The lone hit for McLeod (14-20) was a fourth-inning double by Whitney Idom.
BOSQUEVILLE 6, SEYMOUR 0
Michelle Miller pitched a four-hitter as Bosqueville (25-7) blanked
Seymour (25-9-1).
Bosqueville blew open the semifinal with four runs in the fifth inning.
Leading 2-0, Miller hit a bases-loaded single that drove in Cayla Crews.
Bosqueville added another run when Grace Getman scampered home on a
wild pitch and Haley Feight scored next.
NOTE: Shiner will play Bosqueville for the state championship on Saturday at 8:30am.
State Tournament Notebook
All in the family
Shiner, which advanced to Saturday's Class A championship game,
has a familiar face in the dugout. Assistant coach Cari Lynn Siegel --
who is married to Shiner head coach Brandon Siegel -- was formerly
Cari Lynn Stridde, a former basketball standout at Georgetown High School.
One Shining season
Speaking of Shiner, the school has the chance of fielding teams in both
state softball and baseball tournaments. The baseball team beat Thorndale
in Game 1 of their best-of-three Region IV-A series Wednesday night.
Game 2 is tonight at Texas State
Tony Burger Center in South Austin.
There are just two schools that can double up with state softball and
baseball tournament appearances. Seymour, also in Class A, fell in
Thursday's softball semifinal to Bosqueville. The baseball team, however,
plays New Deal in a best-of-three series for a shot at next week's state tournament.
Rain, rain, go away
Thursday's two-hour, twenty-minute rain delay marked the fourth time
in five years that the state softball tournament has encountered
weather-related delays. Morning showers set Thursday's schedule back
by almost one-and-a-half hours.
Sister act
The stars of Bosqueville's state semifinal win over Seymour were twin
sisters Jacee and Jerica Blackard. Jacee, the pitcher, has won 25 games
this season and hit .523. Jerica, her catcher, is hitting .461.
By the numbers
- 2 State softball championships won by Brenham and Shiner. The state
record is three, shared by Keller, Pasadena Dobie and Weimar.
- 9 Ninth trip to the state tournament for Class 2A Coahoma, a state
record among all classifications.
- 11 Shutouts posted this season by Bosqueville, which did it again Thursday.
- 134 Enrollment for Class A Bosqueville, the smallest school in this
year's state tournament.
