Trustee Angie Pekar, whose family lived on and farmed the property where the
school is being built, turned the first shovel of dirt in the official ground
breaking ceremony last Thursday.
In a later statement, Mrs. Pekar said, "I'm proud to be on the board and
partake in the ground breaking ceremony. It is a place where I lived with my
family since 1952.
"I loved growing up on this place and I know the children of this community
will love it as much as I do," she added.
Her parents, William and Olivia Noack farmed the property since 1952. Mrs.
Noack died in 1982 but her father continued to live in the farm house until
2002 when he entered a nursing home.
More than a hundred parents, teachers, students and supporters were in
attendance to witness the historic ground breaking.
Superintendent Trey Lawrence welcomed everyone to the program.
"Many of you may have thought this would have never happened. This is
exciting," he said.
In his introductions, he recognized architect, Jim Singleton and
representatives of contractor, Sterling Structures, for having done a great
job in planning the new facility.
Board president, Denise Overton, also welcomed everyone and introduced the
board members.
She extended a special thank you to Superintendent Lawrence for his dedication
and hard work in supporting the project.
She thanked the community for giving her the privilege of being a part of this
school board and this project.

Others included in her expressions of gratitude were Sam Atwood, former
superintendent, for turning the financial status of Shiner ISD into a positive
direction; Ken Leach for his work on the project and Bill Caraway for his
service in providing the funds for the project.
The board president had special praise for Jim Singleton. "He is not only an
architect but he and his staff are artists," she said.
To Sterling Structures, she said, "You're making our dream a reality."
Mayor Laura Watzlavick told the crowd, "This is a great day for all of us. It
is time for all in this community to come together for our children," she
said.
Board member, Andrew Schacherl announced the formation and purpose of the
Shiner ISD Foundation. "It is a means to help raise funds to help facilitate
this project," lie said. "Any donation, large or small, will be accepted and
welcomed," he added.
The Foundation officers include: Marvin Boedeker, president, Andrew Schacherl,
vice president; Douglas Kaspar, treasurer; Cynthia Hundl, secretary.
Superintendent Lawrence closed the program by again thanking everyone for
their work and dedication and extended a thank you to the City of Shiner for
their financial help:
